Brain Injury Family Support Group Begins Meetings

Offering help and support to caregivers

Caring for someone with an acquired brain injury can be overwhelming, scary, and exhausting. As a caregiver to someone who has deficits, it can be difficult to discuss your needs as a caregiver with family and friends. The Brain Injury Family Support Group meets monthly and offers support and encouragement, as well as useful and reliable information to improve the wellness of caregivers who often struggle in meeting their own physical and emotional needs.

The group meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at the Denbigh House, 12725 McManus Blvd., Suite 2E, in Newport News. The Support Group is for caregivers and other family, friends, and neighbors who provide support for someone who has suffered a brain injury. Professionals who treat those suffering from brain injuries are encouraged to participate to help bridge the gap between caregivers and the medical community.

The group was formed by Karen Grazionale, who has been trained by the Brain Injury Association of Virginia, and who has had the first-hand experience of being a caregiver. There is no fee to attend the support group or other activities associated with the group. In June a guest speaker from Ability Unlimited will talk about Fresh Ideas to Help Our Loved Ones and in July, a representative from the Hook Law Center will discuss Planning for the Future.Speakers will all talk on topics prioritized by the Support Group as information that would help participants become better caregivers and health partners.
