The PORT Steering Committee needs additional
members
Now is the time to build a larger and stronger team of Steering Committee members that will continue the work of this important group of volunteers.
What do Steering Committee members do in PORT ?
Members help organize check-in and train volunteers each night. They work with Site and Partner Coordinators, LINK staff, and the Sheriff’s deputy as well as guests in the shelter. Their role is to help the program run smoothly and fulfill the program goals. Commitment and consistency of dedicated leaders makes for a better environment for the guests and volunteers.
Who should be on the Steering Committee ?
• Persons with some years of experience in the PORT program
• Persons with “Team” oriented leadership qualities
• Persons with a passion to serve others, but also understand the need for quality in leadership that benefits those being served
• Persons with people skills is desirable
• Persons who can serve at least 1-2 weeks, in the evening, during the PORT Winter Shelter season for 2011/2012
• Persons that are organized enough to accomplish the needs of the shelter, but flexible enough to handle change as it occurs
• Persons that realize that there are no “Lone Rangers” needed in the Steering Committee
If this might be you – then we want to hear from you!
The Leadership Team will train everyone that is willing to serve in this capacity and we will help you to be prepared when the time comes to serve. No one must do this alone – nor should they try to. We encourage new members, that desire to serve in this area, to partner with a current veteran and help the program grow. This plan is not a punishment, but a plan for the future, that will better prepare volunteers to make this program stronger each year and build upon the talents and gifts of each individual leader.
You probably have questions:
The Leadership Team listed below is ready to answer any question and work with you to find just the right spot for you to serve. We are currently putting together the schedule for this coming season which starts soon. Please feel free to pass this request along to others in your church that may fit the skills outlined above and that you feel may benefit the program as a member.
We would like to hear from interested parties by September 6, 2011.
Please contact one of the Leadership Team members:

| GIRL
SCOUT PROJECT HELPS LINK |
My name is Grace Berardini,
I am 17 years old, and am a Girl Scout trying to earn my Gold award (equivalent of an eagle scout project).
I am an 11th grader at Tabb High School in York county,
I play volleyball, and swim, and am active in many after school activities.
For my Gold Award, I am crocheting plastic, water resistant sleeping mats for homeless people to sleep on at night. I collect plastic bags from people, and i cut them up into strips, creating what i call "plarn" (plastic yarn), string them together and crochet these mats for homeless people.

The issues my project addresses are local homelessness and help for the environment. These mats are made out of recycled plastic bags, to keep the bags out of the water and landfills. My real inspiration for this project came to me about the time when i had to choose what i was going to do for my Gold Award Project.
I was listening to the Christian radio station K-Love, and there was a lady on there talking about these mats and i thought it would be an awesome idea for my project. I looked up how to make them, the materials i needed and knew i was going to have a lot of fun working with that idea. I got started right away on my first mat and knew it was the perfect project for me. I have been going to local organizations and groups and have presented my project to them, giving lots of information about recycling plastic bags, and homelessness.
When i have completed about 15-20 mats I will be donating them to LINK of
Newport nNews where they will be distributed. I hope that I can make the homeless people that receive my mats more comfortable when they have to sleep outside and would also like to educate more people about homelessness in our area.
My friends, family, and girl scout troop have all been very supportive of me throughout my project, supplying me with an endless number of platic bags, and giving help whenever i need it. I would also like to give a big thank you to LINK for helping me to distribute my mats to the homeless.
Ellie Braun-Haley said, "Often we set out to make a difference in the lives of others only to discover we have made a difference in our own," i hope truly hope my project will allow me to achieve both. |
