The Many Faces of LINK


LINK is a non-profit agency located in Newport News and serves an area of 773.7 square miles which includes Newport News, Hampton, York County, Poquoson, Isle of Wight, Smithfield and Gloucester, Matthews, Williamsburg, James City County.

A 15 member Board of Directors governs LINK.

LINK's clients reflect the economically underserved population on the Greater Virginia Peninsula.  The diversity of the clients include single individuals, single parents, elderly, those on disability, HIV/AIDS virus, terminally ill, chronically ill, homeless, families, unemployed, laid off, mentally and physically challenged and substance abusers.

LINK's clients represent Caucasian, African-American, Asian, Korean and Native American populations.  LINK's total programs serve 62% African Americans, 34% Caucasian, and 4% Asian/other.

A composite of clients often reflects the following:

  • Raised in poverty;
  • Experienced some form of domestic violence;
  • Never completed high school;
  • Dropped out of school due to teen pregnancy;
  • At least one child suffers from a chronic health problem;
  • Lives with family members of a friend or partner and doubles up with friends to avoid homelessness;
  • Left home due to domestic violence or overcrowding;
  • Is unemployed due to lack of childcare;
  • Lack of education;
  • Lack of work skills;
  • Is entirely dependent upon public assistance
